🎉 Vienna takes the first step – awareness becomes part of the law! 👏
The today (24.04.2025) changed law for events in Vienna – this will be the first city to regulate awareness-work within a state in Austria. This is a strong signal and a big step towards safer event spaces for everyone.
For awareness to be effective, additional steps and measures are needed:
- Violence and discrimination don’t occur only at parties – fairs, conferences and smaller events also need protection and awareness concepts.
- Awareness can never work alone – at least two trained staff members must be the standard.
- More specific definitions and the establishment of minimum standards must follow so that awareness does not become a box‑ticking exercise.
- Proper implementation requires comprehensive training and continuing‑education programs. Non‑profit organizers often lack the budget for this; extra funding is needed to give them proper access, and to sustainably strengthen existing offers.
The current draft does not oblige organizers to train awareness responsible people, but we still recommend obtaining in‑depth qualifications from us or other providers.
AwA* offers a 16‑hour training course for awareness officers – practical, solidarity‑based and survivor‑oriented.
