We are looking for team members for Awareness work in public spaces

For Awareness work in public spaces we are looking for committed individuals who want to actively shape and carry out this work together with us during the summer months.

Awareness work means creating a partisan and solidarity-based point of contact. The aim is to proactively provide prevention and support work for people affected by discrimination and violence, as well as to raise Awareness for mindful interaction and actively put this into practice. The work takes place at a workplace in public space in Vienna.

* Period: from 18.05.2026 to 20.09.2026
At the beginning of the position there will be an onboarding phase from 18.05.2026 to 21.05.2026, during which workshops, further training and team-building sessions will take place from 10:30–18:30. Attendance is mandatory during this period.

* Scope of employment: 13 to 22 hours per week (can be agreed according to need)

* Duty roster: At the beginning of the season, a duty roster will be created for the entire period. This means that all vacation times must be communicated in advance and a shared plan will then define who works which shifts.

  • Event context / club culture work (bar and gastronomy, security, organization and support of events)
  • Streetwork – social work training and practical experience
  • Educational training and practice, experience in facilitation and counseling work (e.g. life and social counseling)
  • Practical experience in Awareness work
  • We particularly encourage people with diverse language skills (such as Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic, Farsi, BKS, Austrian Sign Language, Russian, etc.) to apply.
  • German and/or English is required as a basic working language.
  • We value a diverse team: BIPoC, trans, inter, queer, agender and non-binary people, people with disabilities, and people with refugee and/or migration backgrounds are welcome.
  • A prerequisite for collaboration is the commitment to our Awareness principles (respect, consent, solidarity, power of definition, partisanship, confidentiality).
  • Team members should be resilient under stress and have good judgment in complex social situations, as well as awareness of their own personal boundaries and the ability to communicate them. Part of the work involves approaching people, speaking with police, or mediating conflicts while working as a team.
  • A further requirement is a 16-hour first aid course (standard workplace first aider according to the Red Cross) completed within the last 2 years. For those who do not have this, free courses are available on 29.04. and 06.05.
  • At the latest upon signing the employment contract, a current criminal record extract must be provided (standard in youth and social work).
  • A comprehensive onboarding week as well as training in Awareness basics, gender diversity, anti-racism, and teamwork in public spaces.
  • Additional training is offered on an ongoing basis and can be booked free of charge and voluntarily via the programs of the Addiction and Drug Coordination Office and the Institut für Freizeitpädagogik.
  • There is one supervision session per month. This is a mandatory part of the work.

Compensation:

Monthly income is calculated on an hourly basis. The hourly rate is approximately €17.34 gross. Pro-rated vacation and Christmas bonuses are included.

Two examples of what this can mean in practice:

  • €828.31 net per month for 13h per week, plus pro-rated 13th and 14th salary (paid with the final salary)
  • €1,393.65 net per month for 22h per week, plus pro-rated 13th and 14th salary (paid with the final salary)

The exact number of hours depends on the shifts you work (see working hours).

Alternative employment models:
There is also the option of marginal employment (7h/week; max. €551.10/month) or flexible substitute shifts on a freelance basis (€19.37/hour).

Working hours:
Team meetings every Thursday 11:00–13:30 (sometimes until 16:00), shifts Friday to Saturday & Saturday to Sunday as well as before public holidays from 19:00 to 04:00, plus onboarding and training during or before the project start (see → duty roster above).

You will…
… move through public spaces; especially in the mobile team you will often be on the move by bike (e.g. on foot, bicycles, cargo bike; wheelchair use is also possible)

… establish contact with people at the locations where we work and maintain communication (e.g. presenting the project, offering conversations)

… provide mediation in conflict situations

… offer support in cases of boundary violations and assaults and intervene independently when necessary

… provide support in cases of discrimination (e.g. racism, queer hostility, sexism)

… provide information about further counseling/support services or refer directly when needed (e.g. homelessness, addiction, or violence)

… and, if required, provide psychological or physical first aid.
